Oracle database 12cR1 EE Installation on Linux 6 (RHEL 6, CentOS 6, OEL 6)

For installing Oracle 12cR1 Enterprise Edition on Linux 6 (RHEL 6, CentOS 6, OEL 6), first, you have to download the Oracle database software from the Oracle Database Software Downloads. The database software is Operating System (OS) specific and OS architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) specific. In my case I will use a 64-bit Linux Operating System, so I will download the following files:linuxamd64_12102_database_1of2.zip and linuxamd64_12102_database_2of2.zip files. Download and unzip them into a stage directory.

When we install the Oracle 12cR1database Enterprise Edition on Linux 6, there are some manual steps to be done on the Linux level. This task could be done by using the 'oracle-rdbms-server-12cR1-preinstall' package offered by 'Oracle Public Yum' repository. The Oracle public yum repository provides a free and easiest way to install all the latest Oracle Linux dependencies automatically.
Note: My installation is tested on CentOS 6.8.
First, we have to use 'wget' command to download the appropriate yum configuration file under /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory as root user:
# cd /etc/yum.repos.d
# wget https://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo --no-check-certificate
Now to avoid a 'GPG Key' error you can download and install the GPG Key (a public key used in communication with the an Oracle server). More information you havehere.
wget https://public-yum.oracle.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle-ol6 -O
/etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle --no-check-certificate

Now you can run the following 'yum' command (as root) to download & install all the necessary prerequisites automatically:
# yum install oracle-rdbms-server-12cR1-preinstall

This command:
- create the 'oracle' user
- create oinstall, dba groups
- install the dependencies at the Linux level
- set the proper values for Oracle 12cR1 in /etc/sysctl.conf
- set the proper values for Oracle 12cR1 in /etc/security/limits.conf

Now we have to secure the 'oracle' user:
# passwd oracle

Modify /etc/security/limits.d/90-nproc.conf
# Change this
* soft nproc 1024
# To this
* - nproc 16384
NOTE:
This will modify the default limit for number of user's processes to prevent accidental fork bombs.

Open /etc/sysconfig/network and assure you have HOSTNAME=<your host name>.

In my case I have:
HOSTNAME=linux1.mydomain.com
Add your host name/ IP in the /etc/hosts .

In my case I have :

One you have made modifications to the newtwork settings, you can restart the network service:
# /etc/init.d/network restart
Set SELinux to “permissive” mode by editing the file “/etc/selinux/config“.
Create the directories and set the appropriate permissions in which the Oracle software will be installed:
# mkdir -p /u01/oracle/database/12.1.0/
# chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01
# chmod -R 775 /u01
Now, restart the server and log in as 'oracle' and start the Oracle Installer.

In my case, I don't want to receive security updates. I will unmark 'I wish to receive security updates via My Oracle Support' and I will provide no email.
