  • The MLB-based 3.0T-powered B8 Audi S4 and B8.5 S4 and S5 are some of the very best offerings from Ingolstadt to date. They occupy a sweet spot, offering dynamic performance, refinement, and understated but classic good looks that have continued to age well, ever since the original S5 was released in 2008.
  • Works as expected. 2009 Audi Q3.6 cheerfully connected to vcds, and immediately showed overwhelming quantity of technical data. Was able to diagnose and fix the $70 part – a brake switch that failed to work correctly. Can’t imagine how much Audi would’ve charged for this fix. Seems to talk to all 40 modules on the car.

'Thanks for reading my Audi S4 tuning guide.'

Based on the great A4 platform a set of performance upgrades were added to make the S4 version, and over the years it has been revised and improved.

The S4 is a awesome project car to do. If you do your homework then you can create an awesome S4 but don't be fooled there are lots of competition inspired parts out there that will simply not suit it read our unbiased guides first.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are high on the agenda for the S4.

If you set the toe out to 1-1.7 degrees on the front, and add some negative camber then cornering will usually be enhanced.

We would go to a maximum drop of 24mm - 38 mm. on most models. You risk handling compromises if you go lower than this.

Turning our attention to the S4's engine we need to get a bit more power out of the top end.

S4 make good sleepers if you debadge them and fit the most powerful engine upgrades and handling upgrades you can !

Getting the correct grade of modified modifications for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 motor sport parts just won't work well on the road and will make the car undrivable.

Typical stage 1 mods often include: Remap, Sports exhaust, Suspension upgrade (drop 24mm - 38 mm.), Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Panel air filter.

Typical stage 2 mods often include: Power/Sport clutch, Ported and polished head, high flow fuel injector, Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades.

Typical stage 3 mods often include: Sports gearbox, Engine balancing, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Competition cam.

The early FSi engines had problems with carbon build up on the intake valves, a common issue with direct injection and it seems exacerbated on the larger V6 engines.

Peak power is nice in motorsport but for a drivable and fun car you need a long power band and perhaps extending the rev range.

One of the biggest mechanical motorsport parts you can do on your NASP engine is to fit a fast road camshaft .

The exhaust and intake valve durations play a huge role in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car awkward to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a cam upgrade with other mods and finish with a remap to fully realise your gains.

You will need to ensure that the engine is not starved of fuel so will need to uprate the fuelling.

If you find you get flat spots and surges after your sports kits you should check the fuelling and try a higher octane fuel as well. To get sufficient fuel you may need to improve the injectors on your engine.

Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned S4's uprated injectors.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up. Induction kits are only beneficial to add power if the air intake is restricted! Adding an induction kit to most low power engines will see ZERO LOW END POWER GAIN AT ALL. If you have heavily modified your engine and it's need for air INCREASES DRAMATICALLY then an induction kit is the answer and will help remove this restriction.

Maximum power gains come from a full induction kit with a cold air feed on heavily tuned engines, this can be sited within an air box but a performance panel filter should suffice for most applications. TorqueCars suggest you use a panel air filter as these are easy to clean and maintain and generally perform better than paper ones.

Sports exhausts equal out the flow of air through the engine. But if your exhaust pipe is too large, ie: over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose a lot of the exhaust flow rate and end up lacking power and torque.

Getting the head polished and ported will allow you to get more air into each cylinder.

This is definitely a job for a pro with a flow bench. In nearly all cases of S4 tuning your clutch will start to suffer and this needs to be uprated - read our overview on clutches for more information. The best mods in our experience for your S4 are Remapping or piggy back ecu, fast road cam and air intake and exhaust.

NASP engines do not achieve big power gains if you remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications.

With turbocharged and supercharged engines this is another story.

A remapped turbo will give big power gains and take full advantage of the strength of the block. Adding forced induction will see big power gains but this is usually too expensive to be cost effective. It is generally easier to bolt on a supercharger than it is to install a turbo. It is harder to map a turbo as the boost increases exponentially with revs.

The nice directly proportional boost and rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them simpler to map. Alternatively you could perhaps add water injection to cut down knock.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Alloy wheels can help the brake cooling and are generally lighter than the steel ones. If you are serious about performance then you will need to carefully choose your tires - ideally with a directional tread pattern tire. The drawback to large alloys on your S4 is that you're altering your final drive ratio so this will have a negative effect on performance and acceleration.

Because of this try to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the standard factory sizes. In all cases avoid going bigger than 17 inches on early s4's and on later models stick with 18 inches.

Audi

Apparently, it can be faster than the beastly RS4. The Audi S4 boasts a magnificent 3 l TFSI engine with six cylinders which produces 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. This makes it a serious driver’s car, especially if we have in mind the advanced Quattro AWD system. However, our engineers here at ZIP Tuning have given us three stages of Audi S4 B8 tuning resulting in 296 kW (402 hp) and 525 Nm (387 lb-ft) of torque, 318 kW (432 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque and 340 kW (462 hp) and 583 Nm (430 lb-ft) of torque, respectively, making it faster than even the stunning RS4 with a V8 engine.

The Audi S4 is basically a smaller version of the revered S6. It has a powerful 3 l TFSI CAKA engine, producing 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft), loads of comfort perks, AWD and more. The thing that makes it cheaper than the S6 is the fact that it is a smaller car, belonging to a lower class. However, when we talk about high performing cars, this might be a good thing. A bit less space on the inside also means smaller size on the outside and, more significantly, lower weight and this is far more important for a sports car. Let’s face it, people buying an Audi S are more into driving joy than comfort and there’s enough space on the driver’s seat anyway.

This kind of power combined with the small sedan body means that the car can reach 62 mph in just 5 seconds and go all the way up to electronically limited 250 mph.

And Audi is not the only company that sees the benefits of smaller performance sedans. BMW has produced the M3 with 313 kW (425 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) which is more of a competitor for the more upscale RS4 with a V8 and 331 kW (450 hp). However, if you are more into Audi, or AWD, there is a way to enjoy more power than the M3 for far less money than the RS4 would set you back.

Buy the S4 and tune it. For the S4 we have developed three thorough stages of the Audi S4 B8 tuning process that take the S4, the least powerful car of the three we have mentioned in this article, to becoming the most powerful one, surpassing even the V8 powered RS4 and leaving the M3 far behind.

The Stage 1 alone brings the S4 a lot closer to the RS4 and M3 without adding any new parts. All of the changes are performed on the OEM ECU Simos 8.5 and they bring a seriously noticeable 49 kW (67 hp) and 85 Nm of (63 lb-ft) torque. The power upgrade for the Stage 1 is a three-part process.

The first and the most effective one is increasing the air pressure. The increased pressure means that the engine gets more air to burn, thus releasing more energy and increasing the power.

In order to burn all that air, there needs to be more petrol in the combustion chambers as well. This is why another tweak to the Simos 8.5 ECU was needed, this time to adjust the air-fuel ratio.

The increased amounts of air and fuel brings about the next tuning step – changing the ignition time. The ignition is moved to an earlier stage of a stroke which ensures better combustion, resulting in more power and better fuel efficiency. However, there is an additional perk that is based on changing the ignition time. The perk is noticeably improved throttle response which adds a lot to the feeling that the increased power rating provides.

These three steps result in 296 kW (402 hp) and 525 Nm (387 lb-ft) of torque. Having in mind its size and all-wheel drive, the S4’s acceleration gets dangerously close to the RS4’s, threatening the beastly M3.

This is where the Stage 1 Audi S4 B8 tuning power upgrade ends, but there’s one more thing to do. The stock car reaches 250 mph, but even without any changes, it is capable of more, being electronically limited to the mentioned speed. Well, the top speed limiter is removed allowing the driver to enjoy the full potential of the new power rating.

The ZIP Tuning Stage 2 Audi S4 B8 tuning introduces several new performance-oriented parts. These are aftermarket units used to improve intake and exhaust.

The cold air intake comes from APR, while the exhaust can be either by Milltek, Super Sprint or Armytrix. When opting for these parts you can choose between cat-back (from the catalyst onwards) and save some money, or a full system.

After these parts are installed, the software is adjusted again, so that the new parts can perform smoothly.

The result is 318 kW (432 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque which leaves the BMW M3 behind. Let’s see what we can do when it comes to beating the beastly RS4.

The ZIP Tuning Stage 3 Audi S4 B8 tuning adds just one part, but it is sufficient because the cheaper Audi S4 becomes faster than the flagship model of its size, the RS4. The power gain which results in 340 kW (462 hp) and 583 Nm (430 lb-ft) of torque comes from a new pulley supplied by APR. The result is almost 40% more power compared to the original car.

The 95 kW (129 hp) of newly acquired power makes the Audi S4 significantly faster and altogether a more serious car in terms of performance. Add to this the improved throttle response from the Stage 1 and driving the ZIP Tuning Audi S4 becomes a whole new experience.
